Shielded Metal Arc Welding is also known as Stick Welding and  Arc welding. Its all the same thing. No matter how hard the American Welding society tries to get people to call things by the proper name, welders will continue to call it what they learned when they first heard of it…Stick welding and Arc Welding.

I have even talked to some people who are new to welding that think Old School Stick welding is obsolete…that Mig welding has replaced simple stick welding…that stick welding is only used by old farmers and welding students learning how to weld.

Boy are they wrong.

Stick welding may be old school but it is still one of the most best ways to “stick” stuff together. And the best part is that getting started is really cheap.  All you need to get started arc welding in your home shop is an arc welding machine, a welding helmet, some gloves, a chipping hammer and wire brush and bamm!, you are all set.

The reason I say it is so simple is because the equipment is simple with only 1 or 2 knobs to learn, and welding different metals is as simple as changing the welding rod. Mild steel, stainless steel, and cast iron can all be welded using a simple a/c buzz box stick welding machine. Anyone can go online to Craigslist local listings and find a welding machine for 200 dollars or less and be welding at home the same day. (if you have the right power receptacle)

Two inexpensive arc welding machines I recommend and that are frequently for sale on Craigslist are the Lincoln 225 A/C tombstone welder, and the Miller Thunderbolt…and if you can score a deal on an arc welder machine that also has DC Direct current settings, do it because DC current while not completely necessary , will open up some possibilities later on down the road. 

Not only can you use a wider variety of welding rods, but DC current will let you hook up an air cooled scratch start tig torch if you want to get started tig welding later. Now that is a good tip.

How does a welder get certified for motorsports welding?

Good question. As I write this, there is no welding certification test code book written for the motor-sports industry.

When will the American Welding Society (AWS) create one? Word on the street is that it is in the works. But welding codes are written by welding committees. And committees are slow.

In other words, don’t hold your breath.

If you weld for the motorsports industry and are hearing terms thrown around like “due diligence” or “product liability”, you may want to consider this:

AWS welding codes are all very similar in that they use common test welds to test welders to a specific acceptance criteria. The welding procedure must also be qualified.

The twenty thousand foot view looks like this:

A preliminary welding procedure specification (wps) is drafted with approximate essential variables recorded that will likely yield acceptable results.

Test welds are made using the WPS and the weld is visually inspected and also tested by x ray and other destructive tests like bend, tensile, penetrant inspection etc.

If results are acceptable, a welding procedure qualification report (WPQR) is recorded and used to produce an official WPS for further tests as well as production welds.

So what acceptance criteria is available for motor– sports applications?

In the absence of a specific welding code for the racing industry, the code that most closely resembles motorsports for material types, thicknesses, and processes, (along with similar issues like cyclic loading and fatigue failures) is the AWS D17.1 —Specification for Fusion Welding for Aerospace applications.

AWS D17.1 is a relatively short document that allows the Engineering Authority of a company to tailor welding tests to the task.

The code specifically addresses materials like 4130 chromoly, 17-4 ph stainless, inconels, 6061 t6 aluminum, ez33 magnesium, 6AL4V titanium, and any other alloy it takes to build a race vehicle.

Using AWS D17.1 to certify welders for motor-sports applications in the absence of a motor sports welding code is a smart decision, would hold water under scrutiny from regulatory agencies like OSHA, and would be considered practicing due diligence if the question ever came up under audit.

In order to differentiate your handmade soap company from theirs, you have to find your niche or give your soap an identity, something people will recognize. For example, do you want all your soaps to be pastel colored? Will all your soaps have some sort of food ingredient in it (ex. oatmeal, crushed almonds, etc.)? Find the distinct characteristic you want your products to have, and make sure that no one else is marketing this facet as strongly as you are. That should give your soap a “brand” or a factor that people will only associate with your soaps.

When it’s time to sell your soaps, spread the word through friends, email blasts, a website (which accepts orders), blogging, an eBay store etc. You can also throw a small product launch party and try consigning some soaps to local beauty shops. As long as you work on continuously putting your product in the hands of consumers, your company will definitely meet success!
